Why isn't my business showing up on Google? A complete diagnostic guide

There are four different places your business can go missing on Google, and each one breaks for a different reason. Here is how to find out which one is actually broken.

Short answer

A business can fail to show up on Google for four distinct reasons: an unverified or poorly optimized Google Business Profile, Google Maps ranking factors like proximity and service-area settings, a website Google has not indexed yet, or a lack of structured content that AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity can cite. Each has a different fix, and most troubleshooting guides only ever cover the first one.

Start here: which of the four is actually broken?

Almost every article on this topic assumes the problem is your Google Business Profile, walks you through verification, and stops. That is one real cause out of four, and treating it as the only one wastes time if it is not actually what is wrong for you.

Before changing anything, run three quick checks in an incognito window. Search your exact business name — does a Business Profile card appear on the right? Search "[your service] near [your city]" — do you appear in the three-pin map pack, not just the organic list below it? Then type site:yourdomain.com directly into Google — does anything come back at all? Those three checks land in three separate buckets, and the fix for one will not touch the others.

Bucket 1: your Google Business Profile isn't verified, complete, or trusted yet

This is the bucket almost every other guide on this topic covers, and for good reason — it is the most common cause. Brand-new profiles also sit in something like a probation window while Google builds up enough signal to trust them fully, which is not a setting you can fix directly; only activity and time move it. The specific gaps to check for:

  • Not verified — Google will not show a profile publicly until verification (postcard, phone, video, or instant) is complete
  • Suspended or disabled — flagged for a guideline violation, like a keyword-stuffed business name or a virtual address on a service-area listing
  • Wrong or overly broad category — choosing "Marketing Agency" when you are specifically a "Website Designer" tells Google to show you for the wrong searches
  • Inconsistent name, address, or phone number across your website, your profile, and directories like Yelp
  • A thin profile — no hours, no photos, no description, no posts; Google ranks active, complete profiles above empty ones
  • Zero reviews — an empty review count reads as an unproven business, even once verified

Bucket 2: Google Maps runs on its own separate rules

A fully verified, complete profile can still fail to show a pin on Maps, because Maps ranks on a different formula than general search: relevance, distance, and prominence. None of the causes below resolve themselves by waiting the way profile verification does — each needs an actual audit of what is currently listed, where, and whether it agrees with itself.

  • Service-area businesses with no public storefront that forget to hide their home address can get filtered out of results entirely
  • Proximity is location-aware in a way plain search results are not — ranking first for someone two blocks away while not appearing at all for someone two miles away is expected behavior, not a bug
  • Duplicate or conflicting listings, often left over from a data aggregator or an old franchise entry, split your relevance signal across two profiles instead of one
  • A recent address, name, or category change triggers a re-evaluation window that can temporarily hide the pin

Bucket 3: it isn't your listing. Your website itself was never indexed.

This is the bucket almost every "why isn't my business on Google" article skips, because most of them are written around Google Business Profile tools, not around anyone who has actually opened a Search Console account. If the site:yourdomain.com check above came back empty, your website is not in Google's index at all — a completely separate problem from anything to do with your listing, and the fix lives in Search Console, not your Business Profile settings.

Common culprits, roughly in order of how often we actually find them:

  • The site was never verified in Google Search Console, so nothing ever prompted a crawl
  • A redirect or canonical tag pointing your own domain at the wrong version of itself (www vs. non-www, http vs. https) — a genuinely common, easy-to-miss misconfiguration that quietly confuses crawlers about which URL is the real one
  • robots.txt accidentally blocking crawlers, or a stray noindex tag left behind from a staging build
  • A brand-new domain sitting in Google's natural trust ramp — new sites commonly take two to eight weeks for a first full crawl, even with everything else configured correctly
  • The practical fix: verify the property, submit the sitemap, and use URL Inspection to request indexing directly rather than waiting on organic discovery. If the site was built on a platform like Wix or Squarespace, see why DIY builder sites often struggle to rank for the platform-specific version of this problem. If you would rather have someone read the actual Search Console data than guess, that is the first thing our SEO and GEO service audits.

Bucket 4: you might be invisible somewhere that matters even more now — AI search

A growing share of "who's the best plumber near me" style questions now get answered directly inside a Google AI Overview, or inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini, without the person ever scrolling down to a blue-link result or a map pack. Fixing buckets one through three does not automatically mean an AI engine will cite you back, because these systems pull from structured, direct-answer content and schema markup rather than crawling and ranking the way classic search does. See how to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity for the full walkthrough.

  • No LocalBusiness or Organization schema markup telling AI systems who you are, where you are, and what you do
  • No direct-answer content — a plain-language sentence that actually answers the exact question a customer would type, rather than a marketing paragraph an AI system cannot cleanly extract
  • No llms.txt file pointing AI crawlers at your most important pages

How long each fix actually takes

Business Profile verification: hours to a few days, depending on the method Google offers your business. Maps re-ranking after fixing a listing issue: a few days to two weeks as the new signal settles. Getting a never-indexed website its first crawl after fixing Search Console and submitting the sitemap: typically days once requested, though ranking well for competitive terms afterward still takes months regardless of how fast the indexing itself happened. AI citation is the hardest to put a firm number on, since it depends on when each engine next re-crawls and re-trains its retrieval index — 30 to 90 days is the realistic range.

The five-minute self-check before you do anything else

Whichever of those five comes back empty tells you which bucket to start with. That is the actual diagnostic, not a guess.

  • Search your exact business name in an incognito window — does a Business Profile card appear?
  • Search "[your service] near [your city]" — do you appear in the map pack, not just the organic results below it?
  • Type site:yourdomain.com into Google — does anything come back at all?
  • Log into your Google Business Profile dashboard — any red banners, suspension notices, or pending-verification messages?
  • Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity "who is the best [your service] in [your city]" — are you mentioned at all?

FAQ

Common questions

How long does it take for my business to show up on Google?

It depends on which bucket is broken. Business Profile verification typically takes hours to a few days. Google Maps re-ranking after a listing fix takes a few days to two weeks. A never-indexed website usually gets its first crawl within days of requesting indexing in Search Console, but ranking competitively afterward still takes months. AI search citation is the slowest, typically 30 to 90 days.

Is it free to put my business on Google?

Yes. Creating and verifying a Google Business Profile is free, and nothing about listing your business costs money. Paid tools or services only speed up the process or add optimization on top — they do not unlock a listing that would otherwise be blocked.

My Google Business Profile is verified — why am I still not showing up?

Verification only unlocks eligibility, not ranking. You are competing against every other complete, review-rich, active profile in your category and area, so verified-but-invisible almost always points to an optimization or trust gap rather than a technical block.

Do I need a website if I already have a Google Business Profile?

Technically no, but functionally yes for anything beyond the map pack. A profile alone will not show up in classic organic search results, will not get cited by AI engines, and caps how much a searcher can learn about you before they decide to call a competitor instead.
