The template builder promise vs reality

Template builders promise a website in a day. What they do not tell you is that the code under that template is often heavy, slow, and not optimized for how Google actually evaluates pages. A site that looks great can still rank poorly because of what is happening behind the scenes.

The most common reasons template sites do not rank

• Page speed: template sites load slowly because the code includes features for all possible uses, most of which you do not need
• Generic content: most businesses copy the template placeholder text or write thin pages that say very little
• Missing schema markup: template builders rarely generate the structured data Google and AI engines use to understand your pages
• No GEO backend: no llms.txt, no AI-crawler permissions, no direct-answer copy for AI search
• Duplicate or thin pages: automated page generation creates pages with little unique content
• Poor heading structure: template designs often sacrifice semantic structure for visual appearance

What actually fixes it

Some of these problems can be patched: you can write better content on a Wix site, and some template platforms have improved their technical SEO. But structural issues like slow code, missing schema, and no GEO layer are harder to solve within a template builder. That is why businesses that are serious about ranking almost always move to a custom build at some point.

When it is worth rebuilding

If search is a meaningful source of customers for your business and your current site is not delivering, rebuilding on a faster, better-structured platform almost always pays for itself within a year through the additional leads. If you are getting plenty of customers through referrals and are not relying on search, the urgency is lower.
